It is a scale where, given two measures X and kX, the second is k times as much as the first. This must apply for all real X and k.

It may be easier to understand by considering a scale that is nota ratio scale. Commonly used examples are the temperature scale (in degrees C or F). A temperature of 40 degrees is not 4 times as hot as 10 degrees. Only the Kelvin scale meets that requirement.


A ratio scale requires a zero that is meaningful.
