Statistics, or Stats, is a branch of mathematics. Within maths you have pure, applied and stats.

Stats is the region of mathematics that coves analysis of data, as well as performing analytical tests and calculations.

Depending on whether you have done much or any maths at school/in general, stats involves:

  • calculating mean, median, mode of data
  • conducting a survey and working out how many people on average picked certain answers. 50% hated this film
  • Venn diagrams
  • Binomial Poisson Normal etc distributions
  • Spearman's rank/ Product moment correlation
  • probability
  • building models for the future based on currant and past data
  • AND MUCH MORE

A statistic is a value that is calculated purely from the data - observed values - in an experiment (whether that is a sample or the whole population). A statistic must not depend on any parameter of the underlying distribution of the data.
