Ergonomics may seem like a modern idea, but there is substantial evidence that the basic concept is nearly as old as civilization itself, dating back to the ancient Greeks and Egyptians. The term is based on the Greek words for work and laws of nature, an efficient way of describing the science of fitting the needs of the human to the job to be done. While much progress was made in the field during the first half of the twentieth century, it wasn’t until the late seventies or early eighties that most Americans became acquainted with the science. This is also about the time that the first kneeling chair was offered for sale in the country.

Kneeling chairs were not instantly embraced, however. Part of the reason was that they looked odd, bearing little resemblance to most people’s concept of a chair. They had no back and no arms, and appeared to be scant more than a stool. The early models were not extremely stable, either, requiring the user to first place their knees into position and then sit. If a normal seating action was followed, that is, to sit down first, the chairs could tip over and dump the user unceremoniously onto the floor. This design flaw was quickly modified, and the newer designs allow you to sit down naturally.

These chairs keep the spine and thighs properly aligned to reduce back strain and tension. Unlike traditional chairs, even the ergonomic models, when you lean forward on a kneeling chair the alignment is maintained. Most of the weight remains on the seat, and the rest is transferred to the shins, not the knees as many fear. In fact, the new types let you extend your leg or legs straight in front of you if you so desire.

Some users have all but forsaken their old desk chairs, but most people alternate between the two styles over the course of the day. Part of the reason for this is that they sometimes notice that their improved posture may initially result in a little stiffness as unused muscles are retrained. However, other users report that their back pain disappeared immediately.

When purchasing a kneeling stool, you want to make sure that you can adjust it to fit your height as it relates to the task you will be performing. Individuals who are taller than about six feet will need to pay special attention to this aspect, since some models are not designed to accommodate them. There are, however, models that are engineered for taller users.
