After the defeat of Germany most of the Allied resources were focused on Japan. Russia was threatening to join the invasion forces and it would have been a bloody end to the war if the Allies had actually been forced to invad Japan. The Emperor of Japan was pretty determined to control the islands of the Pacific. He and his military advisors hoped that defeat would only mean that Japan would have to pull back for a few years then they could attempt again to invade the islands of the Pacific. Japan had to be forced into surrender to prevent them from making another attempt. Initially, the Emperor refused to surrender in hopes of getting "more favorable" terms. The Allied forces did not want to deal with a Japanese invasion force again so the requirement was that Japan agree to unconditional surrender. The end of the war was strictly a matter of determining how the surrender would be resolved.

Hitler's armies faced almost no resistance when he invaded countries on Germany's eastern borders:Czechoslovakia, Poland etc. Nor did he meet much opposition when he swept through Holland and Belgium and occupied France without hardly a shot being fired. The German army was well prepared and much better equipped than the Allies who still had biplanes in their air forces and no machine guns and no heavy artillery.

It could be said that Germany had all they needed to win the war but for three things: Hitler himself, with very little military training, took the responsibility for every strategic decision. If he told his generals to do something they were supposed to do it, even if it was the most stupid of all decisions. If the Generals told him something was impossible, Hitler told him they were defeatist, so in the end they stopped telling him anything.

Hitler did not invade England when he had the military strength to do so. He had some sort of strange respect for England and he always felt he could negotiate them out of the war without an invasion.

Finally, although Germany only had Italy as an ally and so could not call on anything like the troops the British and French could from their colonies, plus AMerican support, Hitler invaded Russia on a massive front that he just did not have the manpower to handle. He was fighting the British and their allies in the west, Russia in the east, and he had a big campaign going in north Africa. Taking on the Russians (and the same Russian winter that defeated Napoleon) was the big mistake that turned the tide.
