Since accurate and efficient radar guns have been around for only 35 years or so, we will never know who the first pitcher to break 100 MPH was. Bob Feller told people he had been clocked at 107 MPH at Griffith Stadium in Washington. But without accurate equipment, who knows? The first pitcher, who it is agreed upon that was clocked at 100+ MPH, was Nolan Ryan who was clocked by the Guinness Book of World Records at 100.9 MPH in a game on August 20, 1974.
The answer is Leroy Satchel Paige
also known as Satch
We don't know if the great Satchel Paige was the fastest pitcher in history. Since he didn't make it to the MLB till he was in his 40's, a travesty in my eyes, we'll sadly never know. The fastest pitch was by Aroldis Chapman of the Cincnnati Reds on September 25, 2010 in San Diego. He was clocked at 105.1 MPH. That's some serious speed.
Dennis McLain, Bob Feller, and Dwight Gooden all won 100+ games by the time they were 25. (Dizzy dean won 99.) McLain's 16, 20, 17, 31, and 24 wins was probably the fastest. And he was injured part of seasons 2 an 3.
Bob Feller would probably had won 200 wins by the time he was 26 if he hadn't spent for years in WWII.
The fastest to 100 wins in MLB history was John Montgomery Ward of the 1880 Providence Greys who got his 100th win at the age of 20 in his 3rd season. Of course, this was a time when pitchers started 50+ games a year and completed almost all of them. In Ward's rookie year of 1878 he won 22, in 1879 he won 47, and in 1880 he won 39 giving him 108 wins through three seasons.
There are 36 active pitchers with at least 100 career wins, more if you count guys like Tom Glavine, Mark Mulder and Esteban Loaiza who either are injured or haven't formally retired. You can find the official list by visiting here:
