It's called prostilization.
You can either 'brain wash' them by relating to them and then slowly bringing them over to your way of thinking, or you can 'chem wash' them by drugging them into a paranoid state and then representing yourself as the sole source of normality.
Years ago it was called "Imperialism." Today it could very well be simply the dominant culture securing, or maintaining, its foothold. The truth is someone's values are always being forced on someone, because culture always exist with that which is counter-culture. The dominant culture controls the media, education, and government. It's job is to maintain control and force its values on those who don't conform. Even in a libertarian society someone is having a value forced upon them.
The word mentioned above "prostilization" doesn't exist. The word is "pros·e·lyt·ize" and it's simply the act of recruiting. Normally you recruit people by presenting a compelling case for your "cause." For most causes the proselytizing is done by a committed member ("apostle") of the group (i.e., Political Party, Sect, Group, Fraternity, etc.) Most Protestants would believe, however, that God does the compelling, they just get the honor of taking part in a small way by presenting the Gospel.
The "brain washing" of individuals, as out-lined above is a cult activity. Usually involving, removing the person to a location where their input is controlled by the cult, putting the recruit on a high-starch diet, and minimizing sleep. Early stages will involve, putting new recruits in public areas (airports, street corners, door-to-door) to make them defend a belief they know little about. The result is that they turn to cult teachings for support of their belief and to enhance their ability to defend it. People are often attracted by the sense of community, involvement, or acceptance.
