At 44.6 square miles and with has no permanent residents Kaho'olawe is the smallest of the eight "main" Islands of Hawaii (the others being Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, Big Island, Lanai and Niihau). It was US Navy bombing and gunfire range until 1990 and remains uninhabited because of unexploded ordnance. There are hundreds of much smaller Hawaiian Islands. New Islands are still being "born" and "older" islands disappear into the sea, perhaps never to be seen again.
