a square number is called a square number because there are 4 corners in a square, therefore the number is added 4 times. this equals to the square number.

(another way to look at it. ) The area of square of side s is s2 and if s is an integer the area of such a square is s2 and a square number is therefore a number that is an area of some square with an integer side.

Another idea is to draw a series of pictures with dots, each time adding one more row and one more column

. 1 by 1 = 1 dot

. . 2 by 2 = 4 dots

. . . 3 by 3 = 9 dots

. . .

. . .

. . . . 4 by 4 = 16 dots

. . . .

. . . .

. . . .

and so on...

If you go on with this pattern, every square number with be the number of dots in some figure and vice-versa and the patterns are all squares.
