Archimedes was considered to be the familiar of Merlin, the wizard. No doubt an owl was chosen as it often portrayed as a wise and noble creature.
In the 1963 Disney film "The Sword in the Stone," Archimedes acts as a familiar, or pet, to Merlin the wizard. He often acts grouchy and generally disagrees with Merlin's plans. However, he always comes through when needed and protects Arthur/Wart (as when he saves Arthur from a pike) and also offers him advice and guidance when Merlin is absent.
The name Archimedes comes from a Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor and astronomer. He invented and perfected various machines and tools (such as the lever and war the "Archimedes Screw," an efficient way to raise water), as well as creating many usual equations in defining the world and its properties.
Merlin's owl is named Archimedes.
