(Circa 1985) There are two primary guidons (guide-ons) at Parris Island. The Platoon guidon and the series guideon. Each platoon has a guidon and each series (4 platoons that train together) has a guidon. There are 3 phases in Marine Corps recruit training and the first two (called 1st and 2nd phase) carry a yellow guidon with the platoon number in red in the center. The third phase platoons carry a red guidon with yellow numbers in the middle. The series guidon has the 4 platoon numbers on opposite corners and the EGA in the center. So 1st and second phase yellow, third phase red. There might be some deeper meaning to the colors but nothing credible that I've ever heard.
Helps with Soldiers moral and Company pride!
A guidon typically consists of a rectangular or triangular flag, often adorned with symbols, unit insignia, or colors that represent a military unit. It is mounted on a staff or pole, which may have decorative elements like a finial or tassels. The guidon serves as a rallying point for troops and symbolizes the unit's identity and heritage. Additionally, it may include features like fringe or a specific hem designed for durability and visibility.
The top is called the carapace and the bottom is called the plastron.
