Alan Turing did not invent the computer. He worked during WW2 at breaking military codes. He also considered the concept, called a "Turing machine", which was a machine that could make itself. In his example, this was a tape machine (punched paper tape in those days) which could make itself.

Most importantly, he posed the Turing Test, which was a test to decide whether a machine could develop intelligence. This test has so far resisted a 'yes' answer, but the performance of applicants continues to get better.
