Generally, but not always, painters will charge by the square foot.

They charge between 75% and 125% of the cost of the paint need to cover the room. The variation covers such things as regional labour cost differences; experience of the painter(s); and difficulty of the project. There may be some reduction in cost if you are having the entire house painted as opposed to one room.
