Normally it was a nanny, but depending on whether the mother worked. In the Victorian times not very many women worked, they were mostly housewives. Sometimes poorer family's had to take their children to work because they could not afford to hire a nanny/ child-minder.

Why did world war 2 have a greater impact on ending the great depression than the new deal program?

World War II gave more people jobs because of the need for war goods. And also because as more men were going off to war, companies needed to hire more people to replace them, especially if the person died during service.

Why did many working women lose their jobs after world war 2?

During the war, many men had entered the military, and the shortage of workers meant women were offered jobs they previously would not have been- mechanics, welders, airplane builders. When the war ended, so did much of the wartime weapons production. Men were also returning from military service, and employers were required to re-hire them.

Why did mill owners of the early 19th century hire mainly female workers?

Woman could be paid less because they were thought to be inferior men. Children could be paid even less and could be worked for as long as the factory wanted. Plus children had nimbler fingers and could crawl into machines to fix them.

Why do you think some people didn't want the slaves to be free?

Back then, slaves were vital in the southern economy. In order to harvest the massive plantations they had, slaves were the most efficient way. They worked for free! Plus, many people didn't think that slaves were people nor should they have rights. If slavery became illegal, they would need to get regular jobs for pay like all other people do. Freeing the slaves would also cause big issues for landowners. Not everybody could afford to hire help on their plantations.
