The first computer performs twice as slowly as the second, so it runs at "2x" amount of time used. The second computer runs at "x" amount of time. The initial equation is:
1x + 2x = 240
The result of combining like terms and simplifying the result comes to:
x = 80
Therefore, computer 1 performs 80/240 (or 1/3) of the work, while the faster computer performs 160/240 (or 2/3) of the work. To come up with the final amount of time it would take, we set up two equations:
1/3x = 240
2/3x = 240
This means that it would take the slower computer 720 minutes to complete the task by itself, while the faster computer would finish in only 360 minutes.
