Let the length of a side of the square be S.

Then the length of the rectangle = S + 9, and the width = S - 6

As the areas are equal then, S2 = (S + 9)(S - 6) = S2 +3S - 54

Thus, 3S = 54 : S = 18

The length of a side of the square is 18 cm.

Check : 182 = 324 : (18 + 9)(18 - 6) = 27 x 12 = 324

Does a rectangle have to have 2 longer sides and 2 shorter sides?

If it did not, it would be a square.

Is it generally accepted that the length of a rectangle is longer side?

No. length is usually the bottom. Furthermore, a rectangle doesn't necessarily have a longer side. A rectangle simply needs 4 right angles. Therefore a square is a rectangle, yet has no longer side.

What is the different between the square and rectangle?

square has four equal sides a rectangle has two sides of one length and two of another and the rectangle is longer and thinner

How do you find the hypotenuse of a rectangle?

You don't. A rectangle doesn't have a hypoteneuse, only a right-angled triangle has a hypoteneuse. As for the diagonal of a rectangle, you can draw it from any vertex to the opposite vertex. It's length is the square root of the sum of the squares of the longer and the shorter side-lengths.

The length of a rectangle is 5 feet longer than its width The area of the rectangle is 374 square feet What are the dimensions of the rectangle?

The area of a rectangle is 63 square feet the length is two feet longer than the width what is the width of the rectangle?

Area of a rectangle is length times width, therefore if the length is two feet longer than the width then the length is 9 and the width is 7, when they are multiplied you get 63

If the area of a rectangle is 18 square inches and the length of the rectangle is twice it's width what is the length and width of the rectangle?

A rectangle with one side that is double the length of the other side can be seen as two squares beside each other, that are half the area of the original rectangle, in this case 18 square inches / 2 = 9 square inches. The side of a square is the square root of the area, in this case the square root of 9 square inches, which is 3 inches. Now think about the rectangle again. What we just counted was the side of a square that made up one half of the rectangle you wanted to calculate the area of. So the shorter side of the rectangle is the same as our square, and the longer side is double the length. So the width of the rectangle is 3 inches, and the length is 2 * 3 inches = 6 inches. Or: Area = length x width (A=lw) Area = 18 (in2) Width = w Length = twice width (2w) 18 = (2w)w 18 = 2w2 9 = w2 3 = w The width is 3 in., the length (2w) is 6 in.
