Lets call the number of chickens x, the number of ducks y, and the number of turkeys z.
First equation: You need to buy 100 birds
x+y+z = 100 [1]
Second equation: You need to spend $100
0.50x + 3.00y+10z = $100 [2]
Use simultaneous equations to solve: Multiply the first equation by 10 so you can cancel out the z's.
10x+10y+10z=1000 [1]
- 0.5x+3y+10z=100 [2]
9.5x +7y=900 (3)
9.5x=900-7y
x = (900-7y)/9.5
7y = 900-9.5x
y = (900-9.5x)/7
Now to find z
Multiply the first equation by 3 and subtract [2] from [1] to rid of the y.
3x+3y+3z=300
- 0.5x+3y+10z=100
2.5x - 7z = 200
2.5x = 7z + 200
x = (7z+200)/2.5
7z = 2.5x-200
z = (2.5x-200)/7
So now we have all values of x, y, and z.
y = (900-9.5x)/7
z = (2.5x-200)/7 Both y and z are now written in terms of x.
Recall that x+y+z = 100
Substitute the values in for y and z
x+(900-9.5x)/7+(2.5x-200)/7 = 100 x + 900/7 - 9.5x/7 + 2.5x/7 - 200/7 = 100 Collect the like terms x+1+x = 100
2x + 1 = 100
2x = 99
x = 49.5
y= (900-9.5x)/7
x = 49.5)=> y = (900-49.5)/7
y = 61.4
z = (2.5x-200)/7
z = -10.9 well...the addition of the three is 100, and the cost of them would be $99.95.. but how do you have -11 turkeys? I think you might need another equation(?).
