5x+4y=18, and 2x+y=6, and we know that the long side is 3 times longer than the short side (6 times 3 is 18), so
3(2x+y)=5x+4y
so, 6x+3y=5x+4y
so, x+3y=4y
so, x=y
so, we now know that x=y.
you then change the first equation to:
5x + 4x = 18 (because both long sides of a rectangle are equal)
so, 9x = 18, and x=2. And that means y also = 2.
