9 * 46 = 9*(40 + 6)
= 9*40 + 9*6 [That's the step where the distributive property was used]
and, now its easy. I know 9*4 = 36 so 9*40 = 360 and 9*6 = 56
Thus 9 * 46 = 360 + 56 = 416.
