By breaking down one of the factors.
8 x 9 = 72
8 x 3 x 3 = 72
Find the prime factors first.
Factor strings are multiplication sentences. You can take any factor pair, put a multiplication symbol between them and you have a factor string. The longest factor string for any composite number is the prime factorization. All composite numbers can be expressed as unique products of prime numbers. This is accomplished by dividing the original number and its factors by prime numbers until all the factors are prime. A factor tree can help you visualize this. Example: 210 210 Divide by two. 105,2 Divide by three. 35,3,2 Divide by five. 7,5,3,2 Stop. All the factors are prime. 2 x 3 x 5 x 7 = 210 That's the prime factorization of 210. And the longest factor string.
A factor string is a multiplication sentence. The smallest are the factor pairs, the largest is the prime factorization. And the longest factor string.
you can by starting with one and ask yourself, is this a factor? Then two, then three ect....
Look for factors. Start with small factors, such as 2, 3, 5, 7. Once you find a factor, divide the number by that factor to get the other factor. Continue looking for smaller factors for this smaller factor.
12 has three factor pairs, six if you count their negative counterparts.
Find the factors of all three numbers and then find the largest number that is in each list: i.e. the factors of 18 are 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18. So for example, to find the greatest common factor of 21, 28 and 42, find the factors of each: Factors of 21 are 1,3,7,21 Factors of 28 are 1,2,4,7,14,28 Factors of 42 are 1,2,3,6,7,14,21,42 The highest number that is in all three lists is 7. Therefore, 7 is the greatest common factor. Note: A factor is a number that divides evenly into the number. So, 2 divides evenly into 8 so 2 is a factor of 8. 3 divides evenly into 9 so 3 is a factor of 9, etc.

Multiplication factors cannot be used to find divination factors.
A factor rainbow will show all of the factors. A factor pair is just 2 numbers that are factors of the number you want to find.
There is always a common factor. If there are no common prime factors, the GCF is 1.
