Fill the cylinder about half way with water and measure the amount. Then drop the rock in and measure the amount of water. Now subtract no rock from rock in and that will give you the amount of volume displaced from the rock.
Fill the cylinder with water to a height greater than that of the rock and record the reading off the graduations= V0 units. Insert the rock into the cylinder and then read the graduation again = V1 units. The volume of the rock is (V1 - V0) units.

A graduated cylinder may be used for small objects that are insoluble in a selected liquid. But that method would not work for determining the volume of a sugar cube (soluble in water) or a motor car (won't fit in a graduated cylinder!).

Note the level of water in the graduated cylinder. Place the rock into the water carefully. Note the higher level to which the water rises. The difference between the old level and the new level is the volume displaced by the rock.
Volume displacement is the method used to find the volume of small or irregularly shaped objects by noting the difference in the level of liquid before and after after immersing an object into a graduated cylinder or beaker of liquid. For a small object immersed in a graduated cylinder or beaker, the volume displaced by the object can be read directly from the scale on the container.
If the object in question is water proof, and small enough. You can measure the amount of displaced water when it is placed in a tank full of water, this may not work for a lot of things but it can help when attempting to measure some objects.

Put it in a graduated cylinder. a) Find a graduated cylinder big enough to hold a can of Coke. b) Make sure it has a small scale. (Smaller scales are more accurate.) c) Fill the graduated cylinder with water to a mark on the cylinder. d) Find how much higher the water is when you drop the can in.
If all volume measurements were taken with a graduated cylinder instead of a pipet, the measurements would not be accurate. If something requires a pipet to be measured, it is a very small amount and a graduated cylinder would not be the proper measurement device.
