First, find the comman demoniater for all three. Then add the three numerators together and place the total over the common denominator. Next, reduce this new fraction if possible. Lastly, if the numerator is larger than the denominator, make a mixed number of it by dividing the denominator into the larger numerator.

What you need to add or subtract fractions?

To add/subtract fractions you need to bring both to a common denominator, then add/subtract the numerators(top) . e.g. 3 2/3 - 2 1/5 Convert to improper fractions. 11/3 - 11/5 Brinf to a common denomiator [11(5) - 11(3)] / (3 x 5) [55 - 33] / 15 [22] / 15 = 1 7/15 For addition , it is the same process , but add the numerators ( 55+ 33 = 88]

Explain why you cannot add fractions with unlike denominators?

You can totally add fractions with unlike denominators. You have to first find the LCD (least common denominator) to make them the same denomintars. And then you can just simply add them. What you cannot do is add fractions with unlike denominators without changing them to fractions with like denominators. The reason being that you would be attempting to add fractions that are different sizes. 1/2 is not the same size as 1/3, so it would be like trying to add apples and oranges. You have to change them to a common size and that is the reason you have to find the least common denominator first. While you cannot add 1/2 and 1/3, you can add 3/6 and 2/6.

How do you add fractions in simplest form?

Fractions will need to have the same denominator to add the numerator then reduce the answer as needed to simplest forms. 1/2 + 1/3=3/6 + 2/6=5/6

How are equivalent fractions used when adding unlike fractions?

If you need to add 1/3 and 1/4, both can be converted into equivalent fractions using 12 as the common denominator. 1/3 is multiplied by 4/4 to get 4/12. 1/4 is multiplied by 3/3 to get 3/12. Add them, 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12.
