To add fractions the denominators must be the same.

  1. When the denominators are the same, just add the numerators keeping the denominator for the result, and then simplify the result, eg 1/8 + 3/8 = 1+3/8 = 4/8 = 1/2;
  2. If the denominators are different, make the fractions into equivalent fractions with the same denominator, and then use rule 1, eg 1/3 + 1/2 = 2/6 + 3/6 = 2+3/6 = 5/6

4/7 + 2/7=

NEVER ADD THE DENOMINATORS!

So you add 4 + 2= 6

Then put 6/7 Because you keep the same Denominator.

Easy now you can add fractions with the same denominators! :)

Hope this helps!

Why do you need you need to have a common dinominator before you add or subtract them?

What do you get when you add 1/2 and 1/4 ? You can't even do that simple addition without first changing both fractions to something common, even if you do it in your head and do it so fast that you don't realize you're doing it. The only answer to the question is simply: There's no way to add or subtract fractions if they don't have the same denominator, and if you do, then you get the wrong answer.

Do you add and subtract like and unlike fractions in the same way?

no, to add and subtract like and unlike fractions the denominator has to be the same,

When you add fractions do they have to have the same denominator?

Other name for the bar between the dinominator and numerator?

The bar or line that separates the numerator from the denominator in fractions is known as the solidus.

How is adding like fractions and adding unlike fractions the same?

If the denominators are not the same, then you have to use equivalent fractions which do have a common denominator . To do this, you need to find the least common multiple (LCM) of the two denominators. To add fractions with unlike denominators, rename the fractions with a common denominator. Then add and simplify.

When you divide the numinator by the dinominator by the same factor?

You simplify the fraction.
