Here is an example:

3/4 + 8 = ?

First, make the whole number into a fraction. Make the number the denominator; the numerator is always 1.

So now it looks like this:

3/4 + 1/8

Now convert the fractions so the denominators are the same. 4 goes into 8 2 times so we multiply the numerator by 2 as well.

Now it looks like this:

6/8 + 1/8

Now you just add the numerators together and you have your answer.

6 + 1 = 7

So

3/4 + 8 = 7/8.

What you do is you take the fraction so lets say 1/2. If you want to add with a whole number, such as 1/2 + 3, you have to put 3 over one, 3/1. Than you have to find a common denominator. So you say to yourself what goes into both 2(the denominator of 1/2) and 1(the denominator of 3). That is 2 because you can change two to two (of course) and you can change 1 to two by multiplying it by 2. So pretty much the denominators have to be the same. But, since you multiplied 2 by 1, you have to also multiply 2 by the three because what you do to the bottom you do to the top. So far we have....... 1/2 + 6/2. Than u add the top, and top only. Your answer comes out to 7/2.
