Let's do an example:

5/6 - 3/4 = ?

To find this you must first get both fractions to have the same denominator, or the number on the bottom. This is accomplished my cross multiplication. Multiply the bottom number of the second fraction by the top number of the first; likewise with the other set.

5 x 4=20 and 6x3=18

Now multiply the two bottom numbers by each other.

6 x 4 = 24

This number will be the new denominator.

20/24 - 18/24 = ?

Now subtract like normal!

= 2/24 = 1/12
