An example of a symbolic rule is y=2x-5. Since this is in the y=mx+b form, the y-intercept (b) is -5.

If your rule looks different, e.g. 3x-2y+8=0, then put 0 in for x, and solve for y:

3(0) -2y +8 = 0 <=> -2y +8 = 0 <=> -2y = -8 <=> y = -8/-2 <=> y=-4.

9 out of 10 teachers (I'm with them) would say that the y-intercept is the number -4.

The other one would say it is the point (0,-4)
