Adding a sub panel is a complicated job in as much as you have to know wire sizes, ampacity of wires and proper electrical workmanship. Such a project should be left to a licensed electrical contractor to take out the proper permits and call for proper inspections. By taking this route it will leave you confident that if any mishaps happen to the installation down the road your insurance company will be behind you 100%.
In an average home a 100 amp panel can used up to 55 amps at any one time during certain periods through out the day. There is a way to extend the bus with conductors of the same size as the distribution panel's bus bars. Discuss this option with your electrical contractor.
If you opt for a panel change, have a 200 Amp 42 circuit board installed. The labour costs are about the same as a smaller board, just the material costs are higher.

∙ 11y agoYou put two 50Abreakers in the 100Apanel and feed each subpanel with conductors from one 50A or the other (i.e., two hot conductors, a neutral and a grounding conductor). There are specific rules about whether the subpanel may need its own grounding rod connection as well, depending upon whether it's in the same building, among other things.
You may optionally place another 50A breaker in each subpanel as a "main disconnect" for circuits fed from that subpanel.

If by "60 amp box" you mean a 60-amp service panel (circuit breakers or fuses), you would generally get a 60-A panel that has several slots designed to accept a variety of compatible breakers, from 15A to 60A. If you have a "box" with no breakers, you would need another "subpanel", with wires from the 60A box to the new subpanel, and install one or more 15A breakers in the subpanel. If you don't need more than one breaker, you might also simply use a 15A disconnect panel with a single breaker in it.
Can you plug equipment rated for 50A into a 30A circuit?
Yes, with a caveat. The 50A wire and plug is more than heavy enough for the dryer, so there is no problem there. The possible problem is that the dryer is designed to be protected by a 30A breaker. In the event of failure in the dryer, the breaker may not trip as it is oversized. The best solution? Get a small breaker box from a home center and mount a 30A breaker in it. Mount it on the back of the dryer, run the 50A cord into the feed lugs of the box, and connect the dryer feed to the 30A breaker. This way you can plug the dryer into the 50A outlet like you want, and the dryer is protected with a 30A breaker as usual. You can get small breaker boxes or fused disconnects without too much cost. Just make sure the breaker box / disconnect panel is rated to 50A, as you want to feed it off a 50A circuit. As long as the voltage requirement of the dryer matches the voltage of the outlet (which is presumably 240 volts), then yes. The amp rating of the cord and outlet is merely the maximun current (amps) allowed. You're well under that with 24 amps.

Its not recommended because your new main breaker will allow up to 100 amps and your old wire can only safely handle 60amps. If you put a 60amp main breaker in the new box, that would be acceptable. No, it is perfectly safe. Because the box is overrated, there is no problem. If the box is the main panel, and not a subpanel, install a 60A main breaker so you cannot overload your service. If it is a subpanel this 60A breaker should be in the main panel.

Remember the color code: Black/red/brass screw is hot, White/silver screw is neutral, bare wire/green screw is ground. I also recommend buying a book on Home Electricity repairs.
