To simplify a fraction, the numerator and denominator must both be divisible by the same number (factor).

Divide the numerator and the denominator by their GCF (greatest common factor). For example, to simplify the fraction 14/49, divide the numerator and the denominator by 7 to obtain the simplified fraction 2/7.

In the simplest form of a fraction, the numerator and denominator are relatively prime or co-prime, i.e. they have no common prime factors, their GCF is 1.

To simplify a fraction, you must divided both the top and bottom by the same number. For example the fraction 8/16 can be simplified to 4/6 and then further into 2/4. For the first step 8/2=4 and 15/2=8, thus making the final fraction 1/2.

What is a simplifie?

Simplify (not simplifie) has many meanings which depend on the context. In the context of ratios or fractions, it means reducing the ratio to its lowest or simplest form. This requires the numerator and denominator to be divided by their greatest common factor. If the fractions contain surds or complex numbers in the denominator, simplifying means removing these to the numerator. This requires multiplying both the numerator and denominator by the conjugate number. In the context of an equation or expression, it means to combine like terms.
