By adding them. For example, 4x and x are like terms, so you can add them together to simplify and get 5x (there is an implied 1 in front of x). Or x^2 and x^2, equals 2x^2 (again, there is an implied one as the coefficient). Note, like variables with different exponents CANNOT be added together!
