Go to Insert Symbol. From there you can go through the character sets and you will find the square root symbol. You could also get it in the Character Map and then copy and paste it into Powerpoint.

The best thing to do is to go to insert it through the symbols options. Word provides a wide range of symbols, and it is among the mathematical symbols. On the Insert tab or menu, you will find the necessary options. You will have a little searching to do to find it, but it is there. Pick one of the standard fonts and you will find it amongst the characters available.
