When the neutral wire goes to the switch
If you are adding the pull chain to an existing fixture then the pull chain switch should have two wires. Wire nut either one to the hot wire coming in and the other to the black wire of the fixture.
Wire is the transition material used to carry the electric current; the switch is the controller of that current.
the black wire is the hot wire
Bring power into the light switch box 12/2 or 14/2 wire depending on the existing wire. Make sure you use the exactly same size wire that is used on that circuit. If you do not know look at the breaker in the main panel that controls power to that circuit. 20 amp will be 12/2 wire and 15 amp will be 14/2 wire. Now run another wire from the switch box out to the outlet. Inside the switch box, strip both white wires back 3/4" and connect them together under a wire nut and push this back into the box. Connect the 2 ground wires together and then connect that to the ground screw on the switch. You now have 2 black wires left. Connect them to the 2 screws on the light switch. Does not matter which black wire you connect to which screw. At the outlet connect the ground wire to the green ground screw, black wire to copper screw, and white wire to silver screw. That outlet will now be controlled by the light switch.

To wire a single pole light switch, first turn off the power to the circuit. Then, connect the black wire from the switch to the hot wire in the electrical box, and the white wire to the neutral wire. Finally, connect the ground wire to the green screw on the switch. Turn the power back on to test the switch.
To wire a light switch to a light, first turn off the power to the circuit. Connect the black wire from the switch to the black wire from the light. Connect the white wire from the switch to the white wire from the light. Finally, connect the ground wire from the switch to the ground wire from the light. Secure all connections with wire nuts and cover with electrical tape. Turn the power back on and test the switch to ensure it is working properly.
A 4-wire light switch typically includes a ground wire, a hot wire, a neutral wire, and a traveler wire. The wiring diagram for a 4-wire light switch will show how these wires are connected to the switch terminals to control the light fixture.
To wire a single light switch, first turn off the power to the circuit. Remove the cover plate and switch from the electrical box. Connect the black wire from the power source to the black wire on the switch, and the white wire to the white wire. Connect the ground wire to the green screw on the switch. Secure the switch back into the electrical box, replace the cover plate, and turn the power back on to test the switch.
To wire multiple lights to one switch, you can connect the lights in parallel by running a cable from the switch to each light fixture. Make sure to connect the hot wire from the switch to the hot wire of each light, and the neutral wire from the switch to the neutral wire of each light. This will allow you to control all the lights with a single switch.
Wire the switch to the hot/black lead.
A switch is inserted in series with a single wire. When the switch is on, it is as if the wire had not been opened to insert the switch. When the switch is off the wire is open and no current can flow. All a double pole switch does is allows you to switch two separate wires at the same time with the same switch action. A single pole switch just switches one wire.
Connect the black wire to the single switch hole, the brown wire to one of the holes on the double switch, and the gray wire to the other hole on the double switch.
