Here are three examples.

1) In the store, 500 ml. of shampoo costs 2.50, while 750 ml. costs 3.70. To compare price per unit volume, you'll have to do some quick mental math.

2) An American in Europe is used to "miles" and "Fahrenheit", but sees signs which post metric values. To convert ti his/her preferred system, some calculating must be done.

3) A package of oatmeal gives the recipe for 4 servings, but you are cooking for three. You'll have to figure out each ingredient in the new amount so that the cereal comes out not too thin or salty.
