Parallel resistors are not in the same line of the circuit. Each one has its own line. This means that some of the current passes through one of them, and the rest of the current passes through the other one. (And the circuit layout for any number of parallel resistors works in similar manner.) if you have two resistors, one of 3 ohms and the other of 5 ohms, more electricity will flow through the lower resistor (because it's "easier" that way). The formula for finding the total resistance of these two is; Total resistance R is found from the formula 1/R = 1/3 + 1/5 So 1/R = 5/15 + 3/15 = 8/15. So, inverting the equation we have R = 15/8 ohms = 1.875 ohms.
