The volume of that box is (20 x 1 x 0.3) = 6 cubic meters.

If you pour 6 cubic meters of soil into that box, it will mound up much higher

than the 30-cm depth of the box, and you'll think you've used far too much

soil. The reason is that in the process of pouring it, a large volume of air has

become mixed with it. Over time, as the soil occasionally becomes wet and

the air seeps out of it, it will settle to lie flush with the top of the box.
