36 cubic feet None, unless you want to make the hole bigger. However, as someone who's just dug a hole and was amazed at how many rubble bags I needed to fill to get rid of it. It certainly feels like more than the maths would suggest.

I have heard that earth expands as it's removed as it's no longer under pressure so you can assume a 40% greater volume once it's out of the ground. So in pure terms it's 36 cubic feet, but if you're digging your garden, allow for more.
