Before training for a 5K, consult your doctor to make sure that you don't have any conditions that will be affected by training. After he or she gives you the okay, start making subtle changes in your diet (if you eat french fries and candy bars every day, that's not a good way to train for a 5K).

Start training slowly. Don't expect to run a mile or two the first time that you train. Walk, jog, walk...and then work your way towards running.
