Can a 220V light fixture be used in the US?

Yes, you can easily use it. Just install it as you would any other 120 volt light fixture and change the bulb from a 240 volt bulb to a 120 volt bulb. It will work just fine.

Is is ok if the lighting fixture ground wire is wrapped around the bottom of the chain and the ground wire from the light box is connected to the ground screw on the mounting crossbar?

If you are referring to a porcelain or plastic ceiling light fixture most do not have a place to connect the ground wire. You cannot ground these type fixtures. Just connect the ground wire to the mounting crossbar and forget about connecting it to the light itself. It is on the ceiling and will never be touched unless you change the bulb and then you will have the switch in the off position. It is perfectly safe.

Why is light fixture hot?

When electricity runs through the fillament in a light bulb, the electrons move so fast that they generate heat, which also creates light. Light bulbs actually create more heat than light.

Can a light bulb cause fire?

Yes it can. If a light bulb breaks, the exposed filament will burn out within a couple of seconds and can ignite something with the spark when the filament breaks. Special bulbs can be made for explosive environments to minimize the risk of ignition, such as lighting at a refueling station. A light bulb can also be in close proximity to a combustible substance when it is operating and can cause a fire by making the combustible substance too hot. Florescent lights are less likely to cause fires because they run cooler and are safer in hazardous environments where a conventional light bulb would not be good. <<<>>> No. The filament will burn out in milliseconds not seconds and not enough time to ignite anything in a normal atmosphere. Special bulbs are not made for explosive environments it is the fixture that the bulb goes into that have the explosion proof rating. Fluorescent lamps in hazardous environments again are protected by the fixture that they are installed into. If the light bulb breaks the filament will be exposed to oxygen in the air and burn itself open. It is when the light bulb is in close proximity to a combustible substance when it is operating, that a fire hazard becomes a reality.

Is there a code for fluorescent light fixture covers?

I do not know of a specific code in the United States. However, a flourescent fixture should be covered if breaking a bulb would create serious problems, such as in a kitchen, a place where children play, etc. In lieu of covering the whole fixture they manufacture tubes that cover the bulbs themselves for the same purpose.

What are the advantages of choosing recessed lighting in the home?

Recessed lighting offers illumination but for the most part doesn't involve itself in the decor as light fixtures do. Recessed lighting does, however, contribute to a sleek look in a room, and because it doesn't project from the wall or ceiling, can add to the spacious feel of the space. Recessed lighting allows for a variety of light bulbs. It can be used as directional lighting, e.g., to highlight artwork or architectural features. Recessed lighting is a great idea for closets and pantries where an exposed bulb or fixture might create a hazard.

How many watts does a recessed light used?

The wattage rating of a recessed light is governed by the amount of heat it can dissipate. The wattage rating is set by a standards organization and has to be adhered to by the manufacturing company. The label that is on the recessed light fixture is the maximum size incandescent bulb that can be used in the fixture. Depending on the bulb size used in the fixture will reflect the amount of watts the recess light will use.

How To Choose Recessed Lighting Fixtures?

Every living area needs lighting. Indoors or outdoors, lighting sets the mood for a living space. There are many types of lighting fixtures that can be used to illuminate an area; one type is recessed lighting fixtures. Recessed lighting fixtures are installed in a hole in the ceiling. The main housing part of the lamp is in the ceiling and is not visible; only the outer trim can be seen. Recessed lights can provide a narrow beam of light like a spotlight. They can also produce a broader beam of light like a floodlight. When choosing recessed lighting fixtures for your home, you need to keep you lighting needs in mind. Do you need to illuminate a large area? If so, a recessed light that provides a broader beam will meet your needs. If you're using the light to highlight a particular area in the room, a fixture with a more narrow beam is preferable. Style is an important consideration, too. Even though the main body of a recessed lighting fixture is hidden away in the ceiling, the outer trim and the bulb are visible to the onlooker. Recessed lights do come in an assortment of colors (usually black, white, or silver) and styles. Some fixtures are flush with the ceiling;others are recessed futher into it. Recessed lighting fixtures are usually fixed in place, but some are adjustable so you can direct the light where you want it. And though most are round, some recessed lighting fixtures come in other shapes such as an octagon. Recessed lighting fixtures use a variety of bulbs, too. Some use incandescent bulbs, some use flurorescent bulbs, and some use halogen bulbs. What type of bulb a fixture uses will affect energy efficiency and the type of light they provide. Lighting is an important consideration when designing a living space. Though there are many types of lighting fixtures available to a property owner, recessed lighting fixtures are a practical and stylish way to add light to any living area.
