r + (-5r) = -4r

Think of the number line

-6,-5,-4,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,4,5,6,

Start at '1'(r) and move 5 places to the left (subtraction) you end up on minus '4' (-4r)

Or another way is to start at '-5r' and move 1 place to the right(addition), you end up on minus'4' (-4r) again.

A third methos is to remove the brackets so you have r + - 5r.

When you have a double sign like this, where the signs are different read it as subtract. Hence r - 5r = -4r

The rules for double signs are

    • = +
    • = -
    • = -
    • = +

If no sign is given read it as plus(+).
