An ice road operates primarily in areas of permafrost. These temporary roads are created on frozen surfaces to provide access to remote areas where traditional roads are unavailable.

The roads helped the missionaries as they made traveling easier, quicker and safer than undeveloped areas.
Pucca roads - roads paved with asphalt - are expensive to construct. They are constructed in areas with a lot of traffic. Many desert roads have little vehicle use so are not worth the expense and effort.
Naturally with such a large country only some, and mostly main roads can be paved. There are many dirt roads in all rural areas, as in every large country.
It is probably best not to touch things on the roads.
120 Km/hr on Autobahnen / Autoroutes (Motorways). Sometimes less, where marked. 80 Km/hr on rural roads. 50 Km/hr in urban areas. Often 30 Km/hr on side roads in urban areas.
Roads in hilly regions are sometimes called switchbacks. These are roads that sort of meander back and forth to allow for slower rates of climb and descent on hilly areas.
