A ruler is usually divided by: inches, centimeters, and millimeters.
HOW THIS IS THREE-EIGHTHS
No. There are 2.54 centimetres in an inch. The little tabs divide the inch into 16ths as I recall. the little tabs, which come in different sizes to denote different increments between each inch, are divisions of halves. ie, the inch is divided into one half, then each half into quarters, each quarters into eighths, each eighth into sixteenths, each sixteenth into thirty-seconds and on some rulers, each thirty-second into sixty-forths/
A metric ruler is divided into centimeters, with each centimeter further divided into 10 smaller units called millimeters. This allows for precise measurements in the metric system.
