That would depend upon how many amps will be used in the sub-panel. For example, a 30-A subpanel would need a minimum of 10 AWG feeder conductors.

What gauge wire to use for direct burial for a garage that is 400 feet from your house?

Depends on the size of the sub-panel in that garage. If you are installing a 60 amp sub-panel 400 feet away from the main service panel then use AWG # 4.

Is a 12 gauge wire on 20 amp breaker safe for a sub panel?

Yes, if you are running it no farther than 100 feet. If you are going over 100 feet use AWG # 10 wire on the 20 amp breaker.

Can i use aluminum wire from service panel to hot tub sub panel?

Aluminium wire has produced problems due to unequal expansion/contraction at the brass or copper terminals and long-term surface oxidation. For that reason copper is recommended and there is usually no good reason not to use copper (of the correct gauge for the current).

What size wire is needed for a 200 amp sub panel that is 30 ft. from main panel?

Not an easy answer. If your breaker requires you to use the 75C rating (most do) then the absolute smallest wire that is guaranteed to pass an inspection is 3/0 copper. That treats the sub-panel as a branch circuit and uses standard ampacities. If your sub-panel is in a single-family residence (that would be a big sub-panel for such) then you might get away with 310.15(B)(6), which would allow you to cut it back to 2/0 copper. That, however, would depend on whether the AHJ considers the sub-panel to be a service or a branch, and there are various attitudes to that depending on your inspector, your city, etc.

What is the minimum service size for a 225amp residential service?

Can you use 14-3 wire to power metal halide light outside?

The question isn't what you're powering with a particular gauge of wire, but what's the current draw. If the metal halide light can run on a 15 Amp breaker (from the breaker panel), fine use your metal halide in your residential application and run it on the 14 gauge wire.

Can you add 14-2 romex wire to old house wiring?

Yes, if the existing wiring you are adding to is 14 gauge. If it is 12 guage then you must use 12 gauge. If you are running wire from the service panel it is fine as long as you install a 15 amp breaker.
