It is a statement that two amounts are equal; written as two numbers or expressions with an equal sign in between. For example:

1 = 1

2 = 5

x = 7

x + 4 = 20

2x = x + x

x = x + 1

The first two examples illustrate that such a statement can be true or it can be false; however, they are still valid equations. The next two examples can be true or false, depending on the value assigned to the variable (letter) "x". The fifth example is always true, no matter what value you assign to "x", while the sixth example is always false.
