The answer depends on the context.

In algebra, a relationship, ~, is symmetric over a set S if for any two members, x and y, in S,

x ~ y implies that y ~ x.

For example, "equal to (=)" is symmetric but "greater than (>)" is not.


In geometry, a shape is symmetric if a transformation such as a rotation about an axis (of less than a whole circle) or reflection about some line can bring the shape back onto itself.
