The Durrans equation is used to list Alcoholic Beverages alcoholic beverages according to value for money. The equation consists of 3 components arranged as so:
(Volume of drink*Abv)/price. Where Abv is the percentage of alcohol. The higher the number, the better value. The equation works for any alcoholic beverage as long as the input units are the same.
For example a 2l bottle of 5.3% cider costing £3.50 would be (2*5.3)/3.5=3.02. This is better value than a 0.44l 4% beer costing £1.10 as the Durrans equation gives a value of 1.6.
The equations main limitation is that it does not take into account the consumers tastes. However if taste is not factored in, as it would be for those who'll drink anything just to get drunk, the equation can be a very useful tool to save the consumer money.
