The distance formula is

d = sqrt (x2 - x1)^2 + (y2 - y1)^2

Taking the coordinates (5, 7) and (34, 4), d = the sqrtt of (-3 - 5)^2 + (4 - 7)^2 = the sqrtt of (-8)^2 + (-3)^2 = the sqrt of 64 + 9 = the sqrt of 73 or~8.544 units.

Note: sqrt stands for square root

Shortest distance between two points on the earth?

The two points and the centre of the earth define a plane, and the intersection of this plane with the surface of the earth is a circle - the "Great Circle". The shortest distance between the two points is the smaller of the two arcs on this circle.
