The binary, or base two, number system consists entirely of two numbers: 0 and 1. For humans, it's very inefficient compared to the base 10 system we're used to thinking and counting in: for one thing, numbers grow very large very quickly, as well as becoming very hard to tell apart.

However, computers work most efficiently with such a system: the 0 represents a low-voltage state (off), or magnetic north on a hard drive; the 1 represents a high-voltage state (on), or magnetic south. This allows data and programs to be stored and run in the form of various strings of zeros and ones.

Because of the blazing speed and incredible memory of modern computers, the binary number system is part of what makes today's technology possible.

It is used a lot in computers, due to its simplicity. It is much simpler to design circuits to add (for example) two binary numbers, than to add decimal numbers.
