Acarbose is an antihyperglycemic drug taken orally for Type 2 diabetics. It works by delaying the absorption of carbohydrates in the small intestine so that the blood glucose level doesn't rise drastically after a meal. It also reduces levels of glycosylated hemoglobin.

It is contraindicated for those with bowel disorders like peptic ulcer disease or diverticulitis.
