Is positioning the ground blade in the up position the correct way to install a three holed duplex receptacle by the electrical code?

There is no mention in the CEC as to which way a receptacle is to be positioned. The most common way is to have the ground pin in the down position. This way, if something drops on the plug (cap) when it is in the receptacle, the last pin to disconnect will be the ground pin. Some manufactures of appliances have 90 degree plugs (caps) installed on their equipment to present a low profile when in the receptacle. The ground pin in these types of caps is positioned to the top and the hot and neutral blades are below it. On connections like this the receptacle is mounted with the ground up to allow the appliance cord to drop down when it is plugged in. Still other applications will find the receptacle mounted sideways, usually in the back splash of kitchen counters when there is an absence of space to mount them vertically.

How do you convert a 3 pin plug from an extension cable to a 2 pin plug?

The one thing that you do not do is cut the ground pin off of the extension cord. What should be done is to change the two blade wall receipt le to a parallel blade U ground receptacle. The ground wire might be tucked away in the back of the junction box. If it is bring it forward and connect it to the new receptacle with the ground pin in it. If there is no ground in the incoming cable to the junction box, code has allowed a separate green wire to be installed if possible and taken back to the distribution panel where it is connected to the ground bus. If it is impossible to install a new separate ground wire just replace the receptacle. It is better to be able to plug the extension cord into the receptacle than destroying a perfectly good extension cord and making it unsafe if has to be used in another area in the future.

Which slot does electricity flow in a wall circuit?

Answer for USA, Canada and countries running a 60 Hertz supply service. In a duplex wall receptacle, with the U ground pin at the bottom, the "hot" blade hole is the smaller of the two blade holes located on the right side of the receptacle. The blade hole on the left is the return neutral connection point.

What is the charateristics of the receptacle?

Characteristics of a receptacle is the rating in amps and the pin configuration, which govern the use that the receptacle is approved for.

Is the long slot on a duplex receptacle hot or neutral?

The long slot on a duplex receptacle is the neutral pin.

What is the purpose of 5 Pins plug in wall industrial socket?

Different pin configurations define different configurations of voltage and amperage. Your receptacle could be a three phase four wire grounding receptacle. To see more go to related linksbelow.

In a plug why is the top pin always the longest?

The longer pin on a standard household plug is the GROUND, sometimes called a "U" ground because with some manufacturers, the pin is bent/rolled like a "U". However, there are many other type plugs which have a GROUND PIN but are not shaped like a "U". It is slightly longer than the other pins because it must make contact first (before the power pins) as a safety measure. If there was a fault/defect in the device being plugged in, grounding the device before it receives power will make sure the circuit blows the fuse and does not energize the metal frame of the device which could lead to a shock.

What are two-pin and three-pin sockets?

A socket is a receptacle (hole) into which you insert a pin. The number of holes determines the number of pins.

What is the reference to female when explaining electrical receptacles?

Why does three pin plug is more safe than two pin plug?

The three pin plug is grounded (provided the receptacle is wired correctly).

Which prong is the hot prong in a plug?

If you are refering to a wall receptacle, the one on the right is the hot side. The left side is the neutral and it's slot is larger that the hot one. The U shaped on the bottom is for the ground pin of the plug.
