Newtons is the relative unit of measurement for weight which is mass without the addition of Earth's gravitational field (9.81m/s^2) this causes an acceleration making Newton a vector. However, Grams/Kilograms are units of measurement for mass where Earth's gravitational field isn't accounted for - therefore, there is no acceleration making it a scalar quantity.

1,000 grams of mass weighs 9.8 newtons on the earth.

(It probably has a different weight somewhere else.)
