x**2+6x+5 is a polynomial not an equation. you can put an equal sign anywhere, equal to anything and to make it into an equation

PS. Factoring it:

Factors of 5:

1,5

-1,-5

Rewrite using factors of five whose sum is 6:

x**2+1x+5x+5

Factor first and second term

x(x+1)+5x+5

Factor third and fourth term

x(x+1)+5(x+1)

Group Bracketed terms

(x+5)(x+1)

P.P.S. Shortcut factoring (when ax**2+bx+c, a=1):

Take the factors of term C (labelled d and e henceforth) and place them into:

(x+d)(x+e)
