When a measurement comes out to square feet is it because they are only muiltiplying with two numbers?

A measure of square feet is a measure of area, and area is 2-dimensional. But you may be interested in the total area of a shape that is more complicated than a regular rectangle, so the total area may be the sum of several different multiplications. You also have situations where you want the area of a circle, or some other shape that is bound by complex curves. In these cases the calculations involve more than a simple multiplication of two numbers.
So again, the 'square feet' result tells you that you are dealing with area, a 2-dimensional shape in a plane (or nearly a plane if you are dealing with land), but it does not tell you anything about the complexity of the shape in measures.
